Introduction

La Maison Rose

La Maison Rose, built in 1816, is a traditional stone cottage set in the attractive village of Nans-sous-Sainte Anne which nestles at the entrance of the craggy wooded gorge of the waterfall source of the River Lison. The site rates 2-stars in the Green Michelin Guide.

The village, set in a sparsely populated but widely forested limestone landscape, offers a stress-free springboard to a very varied region with a wide selection of outdoor activities, as well as distinctive regional cuisine and wines, and expeditions to nearby Switzerland, Alsace and Burgundy. The historic cities of Geneva, Lausanne, Berne, Dijon and Besançon are within easy reach and offer convenient access to Nans-sous-Ste.Anne by road, air and rail.

Francis Geere, a Rotarian, and well settled in the area, extends a warm anglophone welcome all year-round and takes pains to ensure that visitors get the best value from their stay. The apartments each sleep four... 2 couples or a family with 2 young children. They are new, comfortable and fully equipped (with all linen, en-suite facilities and CH), splendid views to the hillside and cliffs above the house, a balcony, and access to a garden.

The village of Nans, situated on an ancient salt-trade route, slumbers below the remains of the mediaeval castle of St Anne and enjoys a remarkably still climate. Visitors come for the outdoor activities (notably walking, caving, climbing and fishing), for the spectacular gorge, caves and waterfalls of the Lison, for the 16th century Chateau Mirabeau, and for the 19th century water-powered scythe-blade factory, a national Historic Monument. The village has a cheese dairy, an outdoor activities centre, and even a modest theatre. Above all, perhaps, it has a restaurant offering the local cuisine!
